[UPDATED] Is Jamie Foxx Getting Ready To Play Mike Tyson In A New Film?

Update 4:29pm EST: Variety has confirmed that actor Jamie Foxx is in talks to portray Mike Tyson in a yet-to-be-titled feature film, penned by writer Terence Winter and produced by Foxx’s manager Rick Yorn. The film is reportedly without a studio at the moment while the details of what Winter’s script will entail are being ironed out for a transition to the silver screen. There was no mention of Martin Scorsese but things could change, so stay tuned!

EARLIER REPORT:

Subscribers of Cartoon Network will be able to get a glimpse of an animated version of former boxer Mike Tyson this Fall in the zany new series, Mike Tyson Mysteries during Adult Swim, following its recent push at San Diego Comic-Con. But the entertainment headlines don’t end there.

The Wrap is reporting that actor Jamie Foxx is currently preparing to play the former world heavyweight championship in a new biopic, according to Tyson‘s statements to the Daily Mirror. “Me and Jamie Foxx are in discussion, and we gonna do it,” Tyson said. “Within a year to 18 months, we’re going to do the Mike Tyson story and he’s going to portray me.”
The last time I remember Tyson getting his own biopic was in 1995 with a self-titled film starring Michael Jai White.
I haven’t seen that one, but I am curious to see how a new biopic will play out twelve years since then. The Wrap also reports that the 46-year old actor’s performance will involve some form of motion capture and CG to emulate a younger look to portray Tyson in his younger years. The same report forwarded that filmmaker Martin Scorsese will somehow be involved, although it didn’t confirm right away if he was directing.
This is the first many people are hearing of it. It could be something in development or just a lot of fluff, but these are coming directly from Tyson himself. So I guess between now and the next eighteen months, we will have to wait and see for an official trade news announcement.
Ironically, this also makes the second film Foxx is being associated with since waxing hopeful about starring in a remake of Spawn which also featured White at the time; I say these two should just star in a movie together and get it over with. But that’s just me!
