The new film will take place following the events of the second season in 2014 which primarily focused on Kirito and Asuna as they fought to save the lives of players in a new VRMMO shoot ’em up game called Gun Gale Online, from a mysterious serial killer. That story arc preceding the substory centered on Asuna’s growing friendship with Yuuki had me even moreso on the edge of my seat as it did the series, and with this, the second feature film of the franchise, it looks like Ito hasn’t lost his touch to tell a story that will keep you gripped until the end.
SYNOPSIS:
In 2026, two years since the SAO incident, a new game called “Oridinal Scale,” an Augmented-Reality MMO, is becoming popular among the players. But…strange things are happening in the game and Kirito and the gang are facing a new danger. A brand new story created by the original author, Reki Kawahara and directed by Tomohiko Ito, “Sword Art Online The Movie -Ordinal Scale-” is coming to theaters in Spring 2017.
