Joe Carnahan Goes UNCHARTED To Script The Sony Adaptation

Have you ever seen the 2014 action comedy, Stretch? Yes, the one that The A-Team remake helmer Joe Carnahan directed which fell into release limbo months before finally being granted a Fall opening on VoD and Digital. I’ll tell you, if there was ever a film not to overlook in the course of your life and if you’re looking for something good, funny, energetic and full of laughs and spectacle, Stretch is something you’re going to want to add to your memories as a cinephile.

That said, I’m pretty damn glad that Carnahan is the one sitting in to lead the way for the third installment of Sony’s Bad Boys trilogy and I’m glad to see he’s moved onto other prospects as well. For this, I speak of Variety’s latest reporting on the director’s involvement with Sony’s forthcoming live-action adaptation, Uncharted. A director is currently being sought after while Carnahan is solely attached to write the script based on Naughty Dog’s hit game franchise which focuses on the adventures and exploits of treasure hunter Nathan Drake.

“In a perfect world I would love to do both, but right now, I’m only on board to write the script,” he said.

“Archaeology today is in itself an antiquity, but that world has always fascinated me. Especially when you go to a museum today and wonder how a piece got there to begin with,” he said. “Plus, the property itself is so popular that it was hard to turn down an opportunity to work on it.”

The film itself had been in development since 2008 with screenwriters such as Thomas Dean Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer, David O. Russell and Neil Burger tapped to pen the script at various times before passing the film on. Multiple stops and starts ensued with production, at one point, set to commence last year while other news pointed to a potential 2017 release. Of course, a release date still remains pending as do other matter of news, including casting.
Avi Arad and Ari Arad are producing the film with Charles Roven, Alex Gartner. In the meantime, further updates are abound for Carnahan’s other gig, Netflix’s Wheelman with Frank Grillo while Bad Boys 3 commences principle photography next year with Will Smith and Martin Lawrence returning.
Oh, and by all means, see Stretch. You’re welcome. 
