I’ve been working on a particularly big piece I’ll likely post in a month or so, which is partly why it’s been so quiet here. You know what though? Last Samurai Standing now has an official trailer ahead of its November 13 premiere and there’s no way I’m missing it, with Junichi Okada front and center of all the incredible and epic action.
In the late 19th century during the Meiji period, 292 warriors, including Shujiro Saga (Junichi Okada), gather at Tenryuji Temple in Kyoto at nightfall, lured by the promise of a huge cash prize. Each given a wooden tag, they join a vicious game in which they must steal the tags of their fellow participants and reach Tokyo to win the prize money. Under the veil of night, the temple grounds are filled with unease and the presence of bloodthirsy warriors. When the signal is given to begin the game, the combatants launch into their relentless battle for survival.
Last Samurai Standing clocks in at six hourlong episodes and is directed per episode by Michihito Fujii, Kento Yamaguchi, and Toru Yamamoto, and is based Shogo Imamura’s Kodansha Bunko publication of serial “Ikusagami” novels. The series was adapted for the screen by Fujii and Yamaguchi, and by Risa Yashiro, and is produced by Kosuke Oshida, and exec produced by Shinichi Takahashi.
Okada is joined on screen by an extensive cast roster that lists Yumia Fujisaki, Kaya Kiyohara, Masahiro Higashide, Shota Sometani, Taichi Saotome, Yuya Endo, Taiiku Okazaki, Kairi Jo, Yasushi Fuchikami, Takaaki Enoki, Yoshi Sakou, Satoru Matsuo, Toshihiro Yashiba, Daisuke Kuroda, Mitsuo Yoshihara, Wataru Ichinose, Takashi Sasano, Yuya Matsuura, Ryudo Uzaki, Arata Iura, Tetsushi Tanaka, Ayumu Nakajima Takayuki Yamada, Riho Yoshioka, Kazunari Ninomiya, Hiroshi Tamaki, Hideaki Ito, and Gaku Hamada.
