Disney+ series Hawkeye helmer Rhys Thomas is on deck to direct a live-action adaptation of hit animated series Robotech. The move marks the latest update since its development fifteen years ago, firstly setting up shop at Warner Bros. before the studio applied its Hollywood Gang label some years later and circling a number of producers and writers to get the cogs spinning, and even hiring Aquaman director James Wan to direct back in 2015.
Now in the hands of Sony Pictures, Thomas will shepherd the tale of young pilots who, with the help of giant robots crafted from crash-landed alien technology, become Earth’s last hope against waves of attacks from intergalactic warriors looking to retrieve their flagships energy source, “the protoculture”. The animated series launched in 1985 by Harmony Gold USA in association with Tatsunoko Productions, and became a successful multimedia franchise spawning numerous games, artbooks, comics, novels and more.
Thomas will direct from a script by Art Marcum and Matt Holloway with rewrites by Brian Gatewood and Alessandro Tanaka. Mark Canton and Gianni Nunnari are producing, with Harmony Gold also involved.
