Marvel Franchise Vehicle, VENOM, Strikes A Release Date From Sony

It’s been ten years since Marvel villain, Venom, went toe-to-toe with Spider-Man in a movie. Spin-off efforts then underwent a series of gymnastic developments while in limbo and needless to say I won’t get too much into the convoluted history that occurs thereafter.

That said, about a year after The Amazing Spider-Man 2, it was finally announced that Marvel would help Sony get itself together with this particular IP in lieu of everything happening with the MCU leading up to Avengers: Infinity War. Does this mean Venom will appear in the MCU eventually as well? I couldn’t tell you, but with Edge Of Tomorrow scribe Dante Harper providing the script as of nearly a year ago with stewards Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach producing, the word now is that an official release date is being slotted for October 5, 2018, the former release date of James Wan’s upcoming DC adaptation, Aquaman, film now set fot December 21, 2018.

Alex Kurtzman who wrote The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and also helmed this summer’s upcoming reboot of The Mummy starring Tom Cruise, will direct with the prospects of launching a new franchise that branches away from the Spider-Man movies; Tom Holland stars in Jon Watt’s Spider-Man: Homecoming with Marisa Tomei, Donald Glover and Michael Keaton on July 7.

Venom was created by Randy Schueller, David Michelinie, Mike Zeck and Todd McFarlane in 1984 and would gain further prominence as a villain several years later. The crux of the character centers on him as an alien symbiote who needs a host to survive, ultimately taking on several including Peter Parker rival, Eddie Brock.

Columbia Pictures executives Palak Patel and Eric Fineman will oversee the film.

Sony also has a tentatively untitled Miles Morales/Spider-Man animated feature film from from directors Bob Persichetti and Peter Ramsey arriving on December 21, 2018, opposite Aquaman. As for any of Sony’s previously hyped Spider-Man spin-offs including a potential female-led project that was reported in 2014, I suppose that web will be woven another time if at all.

Stay tuned!
