Actor Dev Patel’s directorial debut, Monkey Man, will bow on Netflix in 2022 for most of the world excluding select terrories with pre-existing deals, according to Deadline‘s Andreas Wiseman.

The report comes following the film’s recent completion in Indonesia, as highlighted in a recent Instagram post by the film’s stunt team. Footage was also screened for buyers at last week’s EFM, wherein one individual described it as “John Wick in Mumbai”, according to Wiseman.

The film’s action was spearheaded by stunt coordinator Udeh Nans (Beyond Skyline, The Queen Of Black Magic), with fight choreography by Brahim Chab (The Driver, Abduction).

Patel stars in the revenge thriller in which he plays “an unlikely hero who emerges from prison to take on a world enmeshed in corporate greed and eroding spiritual values, and seeking revenge from those who took everything from him years before.”

The film also stars Sharlto Copley (District 9), Sobhita Dhulipala (Psycho Raman) and Sikandar Kher (24: India), from a script by Patel and co-scribes Paul Angunawela and John Collee.

“I’m so thrilled to be partnering with Netflix on this adventure. I hope this will be a fresh addition to the genre at a time in this industry where my story can become our story.” said Patel in a statement to Deadline.

“Shooting a film during a pandemic has been quite challenging to say the least, but the opportunity to reimagine stories from my childhood and infuse them with my love of action cinema has been an absolute joy. Big love to Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee for championing us from the very beginning and Aaron Gilbert and the team at Bron for giving an unproven filmmaker like myself a voice.”

Patel also produced the film with Thunder Road’s Iwanyk and Lee, alongside Jomon Thomas, Samarth Sahni, Christine Haebler, and Anjay Nagpal. Thunder Road’s Jonathan Fuhrman exec produced with Bron’s Aaron L. Gilbert, Creative Wealth’s Jason Cloth, Bron’s Steven Thibault, and with Natalya Pavchinskaya.
