I was a little late catching up with the My Hero Academia animated series. Not too late, however, as a steady viewing of episodes brought me up to speed with its weekly rollout on Crunchyroll before long.
Needless to say, I’m looking forward to what Bones brings for its next season in the wake of our hero Deku’s latest daunting page-turner of a chapter bookended by Suda Masaki’s heartful outro, Long Hope Philia. As for what this next update entails, Legendary is daring the odds once more to make My Hero Academia a living, breathing live action spectacle.
The manga, and its 2016 series, set our spectacular story in a world where 80% of humanity has developed some sort of special powers, known as quirks – not all of them super, and not all used for good. At the center of it all is a young boy named Midoriya Izuku who obsessively follows the new heroes while having no abilities of his own.
Published in 2014 by Shueisha at Weekly Shonen Jump from mangaka Horikoshi Kohei, the 2017 Sugoi Japan Award-winning manga is a global phenomenon with more than 17 million copies in circulation and nine spots in PD BookScan’s Top 20 U.S. adult graphic novels list for this past August.
In the past four years, My Hero Academia has swiftly become one of the headline manga of their Weekly Shonen Jump series – a rip-roaring adventure elevated by strong art, charming characters, and consistent mastery of battle story fundamentals. The anime, currently in its third season with a fourth in the works, is one of the most popular in Japan and has become a hit abroad as well and an animated feature film, My Hero Academia: Two Heroes, recently premiered in the US to fan elation.
Alex Garcia and Jay Ashenfelter are overseeing production on behalf of the studio next to Shueisha’s Yoritomi Ryosuke. Toho has reserved release rights in Japan.
Next on Legendary’s roster are
Godzilla: King Of The Monsters and Detective Pikachu both set for release in 2019, with Godzilla VS. Kong stirring in pre-production for a May 2020 release.
