Director Jo Jin-gyu’s offbeat crime comedy, My Wife Is A Gangster, is one of the more beloved bookmarks of Asian film in the last twenty years. I haven’t seen the second or third yet, while it’s been almost twenty years since Jo’s had his hands on the franchise, and only in the past month or so has it become clear that he’s returning firmly to the IP, collaborating with Indonesia’s Emtek Group and SinemArt.

Actress Shin Eun-kyung stars in the original as Eun-jin a crimeboss whose lethality is both feared and revered. Upon her sister’s deathbed, Eun-jin commits to getting married and settling down while doing her best to hide her other life from her loving husband. The story unravels with an offbeat romantic adventure punctuated by self-revelation, poignance and a few doses of action and thrills to boot – a task which now goes to actress Faradina Mufti (Impetigore, Legenda Kelam Malin Kundang) who will star in the titular role, joined by Dimas Anggara, Jerome Kurnia, and Dimaz Andrean.

Additionally, the word so far is that Jo himself is directing the revamp with Sharad Sharan (Legenda Budak franchise, Ombak Rindu) producing. Preparation and development lasted six months prior to production which kicked off a few weeks into November, and wrapped just this past weekend.

A release date is unknown, but do put this on your 2026 radar in the meantime.
