Currently underway as of Tuesday is the official Kickstarter campaign for New Super Pussycat (or Nova Super Gatinha if you’re Portuguese). The Tokusatsu and Hong Kong-inspired fantasy action short already has a cast ready to play its part with actress Brie Slompo starring in the lead role from a script by Wakashu star/director Lady Jill (a.k.a Jill Gillespie).

In a far future where some women started awakening superhuman powers at age 25, MARY MEOW is the cyborgian super-heroine SUPER PUSSYCAT. She has a loving relationship with girlfriend RINA RONRON, but Mary’s chaotic routine as a super-hero is making the two struggle to make ends meet… And everything gets worse when the Pussycat’s arch-enemy, the fearsome MADAM TARANTULA, kidnaps Rina!
Now Mary will turn to a former Pussycat-turned-enemy, THE TIGRESS, in order to learn a powerful technique that can defeat Madam Tarantula for good and save the world – and possibly her relationship while at it!
New Super Pussycat marks the latest from Gillespie following the trajectory she’s been on in the past year at festivals with the 2025 martial arts noir, Wakashu. She and her team and is aiming for a production start later this year through her Transcoded Filmes label.
Gillespie is also an excellent fight choreographer so I suspect she’ll be handling the action as well, in addition to steering the film’s pure and progressive movement.
NEW SUPER PUSSYCAT is an invitation into a journey, a world for people who are entirely like me, who struggled to fit in pop culture’s well-curated boxes of “feminine” and “masculine”. It’s for the girls who are into action, martial arts and Transformers – and it’s for the boys who were secretly into “WINX Club”. And all the fluid spectrum in-between. And for most of all, it’s for women who love women – no subtext, no “reading into it”, this is an open, out-of-its-closet sapphic super-heroine love story, where our protagonists discover – or recover – the joy of being – and loving – women.
