A star-studded handful took to the stage on Friday at Tokyo Comic Con for the announcement of martial arts adventure, Ninja Wars. The film is being directed by Koichi Sakamoto as a culmination of his brand of Ninjaverse films combining the cast of 2019’s Blackfox: Age Of The Ninja, and 2025’s Shogun’s Ninja.
The main cast line-up that took to the stage includes Chihiro Yamamoto and Kanon Miyahara, along with Nashiko Momotsuki, and Kane Kosugi. The film hails from Tokyo-based Nippon Film Broadcasting Co., Ltd. – owner of Prime Video’s “Jidaigeki Senmon Channel” and other channels – and will release in 2026 as part of its overseas period drama distribution brand, “24/7 Samurai-Shinobi.
“I’m very happy to be able to work with people I respect and love.” Director Sakamoto also said of the film, “I hope you’ll see the amazingness of Japanese action with your own eyes!”.
The project also revealed actress Miki Mizuno as part of the cast roster, who added in a video announcement, “I play a key role in the story and have some big scenes, so I’ll do my best!”
“These days, period dramas are attracting attention from all over the world, but I will do my best to continue on the path that our great predecessors have paved,” said Yamamoto.
Both Blackfox: Age Of The Ninja and Shogun’s Ninja are streaming for free from now through January 5 to commemorate the production of Ninja Wars. In the meantime, the official production teaser announcement is online as well, and kudos to the eagle-eyed Shaun Williams of Fu For Thought for catching it for me on Friday; it also turns out that we’re quoted midway in the promo. Giggity!
Isurugi Ritsuka (Yamamoto Chihiro), the head of a group of foxes, is investigating the Byakuren Sect, a suspicious new cult that is stirring up the masses and plotting a rebellion against the shogunate. There, she meets Otaka (Miyahara Kanon), a Fuma ninja who has arrived on a mission from the shogun. Ritsuka and Otaka’s comrades face the same enemy: the Iga ninjas, led by Hattori Hanzo (Kain Kosugi), who bear a grudge against the Tokugawa clan and wish for its restoration…!! The worlds of BLACKFOX and SHOGUN’S NINJA intersect as the NINJA WARS, a ninja war between the fox group, Fuma ninjas, and Iga ninjas, begins!!
