ONE PIECE: Eiichiro Oda, Netflix Announce Season Two Development For Hit Live-Action Series Adaptation

Netflix is setting sail with a second season of its live-action treatment of hit series, One Piece. The show is the latest evolution based on the brainchild of manga and creator Eiichiro Oda who also serves as one of the show’s key exec producers, and who has undoubtedly been a prominent voice in helping steer the show’s first season eight-episode volley into fruition.

Netflix took to its multiple platforms on social media and YouTube, with Oda taking up the megaphone via Transponder Snail, a key fixture within the series. Oda’s announcement reads as follows:

“To the Straw Hat Grand Fleet: What did you think of Season 1 of the live-action ONE PIECE? I spent a long time working on it with Netflix and Tomorrow Studios. It seems people around the world have been enjoying the show, which makes the hard work from the production team truly worth it.

To everyone who’s been a fan of ONE PIECE for years, and to those who experienced ONE PIECE for the first time, thank you so much.

Two weeks after the launch, I just received some great news. Netflix has decided to renew the show! The adventures of Iñaki and the live-action Straw Hats will continue onward!

It’ll still take a while to get the scripts ready, so please be patient.

From here on, it seems to me the Straw Hats will need a great doctor… We will see!”

Season one of One Piece lauched on Netflix on August 31 and continues to garner top-trending spaces online. To date, the show ranks #1 globally on the streamer with 37.8 Million views amassed in less than two weeks since its release, and has also reached the Top 10 in 93 countries, debuting at #1 in 46.

Created and written by showrunners Steven Maeda and Matt Owens, One Piece dives right into the adventure with a truncated approach into crafting the union of the show’s multiple characters. Iñaki Godoy plays the rubbery Gum-Gum Fruit-imbued Monkey D. Luffy, a straw hat-wearing pirate who galvanizes a ragtag crew throughout his adventure battling wicked pirates, pilferers, murders and corrupt marines as he sets course to the Grand Line to find the titular fabled treasure and become “King Of The Pirates”.

Among key cast expected to return for the new season are Mackenyu in the role of triple sword-wielding Roronoa Zoro, Emily Rudd as the cunning Nami whose own personal quest soon laps into Luffy’s, Jacob Romero as the sharp slingshooter Usopp, and Taz Skylar as chef and elite kickboxer Sanji. The show hails from Shueisha, Tomorrow Studios and Netflix.
