PACIFIC RIM 2 Gets Canned, Del Toro In Talks To Helm FANTASTIC VOYAGE Remake

If you’re wondering at all why it is that Crimson Peak helmer Guillermo Del Toro hasn’t made a peep about Pacific Rim 2, you would be forgiven for thinking he was actually busy working on it. In that case, sorry to burst your bubble.

THR now brings news that those efforts are off the table indefinitely with the director now in talks to boarding a remake of the 1966 film, Fantastic Voyage. 20th Century Fox and James Cameron’s Lightstorm Entertainment are backing the project with a story initially set during the Cold War when a group scientists are tasked with miniaturizing themselves down to atomic size to save the life of a scientist after a near-fatal attempt on his life. Justin Rhodes is writing the script with Blade 2 scibe David Goyer who is also executive producing while Cameron, Jon Landau and Rae Sanchini will produce through Lightstorm.
Del Toro caused a huge ruckus among fans pining for a Pacific Rim sequel when he announced an April 2017 date a year and a half ago. With Pacific Rim 2 currently off the table, Del Toro’s schedule is pretty clear for him to choose his next projects after this whether its Fantastic Voyage, or the long-awaited Hellboy 3 or other.
That said, with the first film having reportedly done well in China, Dalian Wanda Group’s majority acquisition of Legendary Pictures could revamp those efforts. Maybe…
…or not.
Isn’t movie news fun? You betcha.
