PROMARE: ‘Gurren Lagann’ Duo Reunite For New Sci-Fi Action Anime Feature From Toho In May

If director Imaishi Hiroyuki ever blew your mind in the last ten years or so with Gainax’s Gurren Lagann and the sci-fi female-fronted Kill La Kill housed under his Studio Trigger banner, you’ll be pleased to learn that he’s reteaming once more with writer Nakashima Kazuki for a brand new feature animated movie.

Promare is the name and it’s already garnered the attention of the fandom quite a bit following news broken last week on Twitter. Studio Trigger is partnered with XFLAG and Sanzigen for the production which was announced back in 2017 and with word that Toho will be releasing the film in Japan beginning in May.

Here’s the skinny as reported by Goboiano:

A sudden mutation led to the appearance of Burnish, a fire-wielding race, who destroyed half of humanity. All has been quiet since the calamity, but 30 years later, a deadly group called Mad Burnish has started attacking. The Burning Rescue group was founded to combat Mad Burnish, and they have an impulsive new member named Galo Thymos.

Studio Trigger has a raft of anime projects under its wing since launching in 2014 with Kill La Kill – a show for which I’m personally calling for a live-action adaptation or a second season (call it wishful thinking at this juncture). Their latest, coming of age mecha sci-fi action series, Darling In The Franxx is available wherever anime is streaming and it’s definitely worth checking out if you’re keen.

Promare sounds like a fun ride, and I reckon we won’t hear much on a stateside release until this Winter or in early 2020. What say you? Comment below!
