Lisa Joy’s feature debut, Reminiscence, looks nothing short of signature for the work she’s contributed to television, most prominently HBO series Westworld. The official trailer is out for all to witness now and with a cast that lists Hugh Jackman as a P.I. who treads metaphysical battlefields in a story that unearths even more riddles for his own self-discovery.
Nick Bannister (Hugh Jackman), a private investigator of the mind, navigates the darkly alluring world of the past by helping his clients access lost memories. Living on the fringes of the sunken Miami coast, his life is forever changed when he takes on a new client, Mae (Rebecca Ferguson). A simple matter of lost and found becomes a dangerous obsession. As Bannister fights to find the truth about Mae’s disappearance, he uncovers a violent conspiracy, and must ultimately answer the question: how far would you go to hold on to the ones you love?
Not that all matters of sci-fi fit any fan of the genre but Reminiscence definitely looks like suitable entertainment, especially for anyone who’s seen classics like Split Second, or even hits like Blade Runner or Natural City, save for the glitzy neon and holographic allure of the latter two. Take a bit from Inception, a top tier cast and several doses of action and danger and you have a film that clearly aims pretty high for a first timer. Joy’s got some goals, y’all.
Reminiscence also stars Thandie Newton, Cliff Curtis, Marina de Tavira, Daniel Wu, Mojean Aria, Brett Cullen, Natalie Martinez, Angela Sarafyan and Nico Parker, with Joy directing from her own original screenplay. Joy is also producer alongside Jonathan Nolan, Michael De Luca and Aaron Ryder, with Athena Wickham, Elishia Holmes and Scott Lumpkin executive producing, and Joy joined by a number of fellow creative collaborators from her time on Westworld.
Warner Bros. Pictures will release the film day-and-date in theaters nationwide on August 20, as well as on HBO Max in UHD, HDR10, Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos on supported devices for 31 days from theatrical release.
