ROAD HOUSE Sequel Reteams ‘The Covenant’ Star And Director

Some of the best news to come out of the trades on Wednesday with word that Guy Ritchie is officially tackling the sequel to last year’s Road House. The news comes following developments over the last several weeks with reports coming from subcription news platform Puck on Ritchie’s involvement.

The film marks a reunion with leading man Jake Gyllenhaal for a third time with The Covenant director, whose script will be written by Will Beall. Ritchie replaces Doug Liman who directed the 2024 revamp of Rowdy Herrington’s 1989 action classic starring Patrick Swayze – an effort that led to quite a bit of controversy leading up to its streaming launch on Prime Video.

I won’t go into the specifics of the BTS drama, but Liman’s iteration saw Gyllenhaal reimagining Swayze’s character as a former professional fighter named Dalton, down-and-out and living in his car until he’s sought by a bar manager to work as a cooler for her business in the Florida Keys. Dalton’s actions while employed soon get wind of a rich developer whose backlash at the bar, and Dalton by association, results in the stoic resorting to his own violent urges to bring justice the only way he can.

Not everyone liked what Liman delivered, but the film did plentily in viewership enough to warrant a sequel announcement a year ago. Ritchie and Gyllenhaal’s next outing will be later this year with extraction thriller, In The Grey.
