Following a teaser reveal back in March, Nobuo Mizuta’s new Yakuza revival, Ryuji, has an official trailer circling online. Leading man Yuya Yagira takes the title role in succession from late actor Shoji Kaneko who wrote and starred in Toru Kawashima’s 1983 original, and who died from cancer a week after that film’s release.
“I’m quitting. The yakuza.”
Ryuji, having decided to leave the yakuza life for the sake of his beloved wife and child, finds happiness in his new life, but there are also scenes where he can’t help but admit, “It’s not easy,” as he grapples with the mundane routine.
Meanwhile, another “family”—Nao and Hiroshi—appears before Ryuji, seeking his help after he leaves the gang. In these two worlds that never intersect, Ryuji’s heart is deeply disturbed. And then…
A cast of popular and talented actors comes together to depict the ultimate story of love and bonds in “RYUJI.” A legend that will once again etch its name into the history of Japanese cinema is about to begin anew.
As I previously wrote, the new reimagining of Ryuji is billed as a fresh reinterpretation of Kawashima’s crime drama which remains a cult favorite to this day. The film also stars Rina Kawaei, Riku Hagiwara, and BE:FIRST member JUNON, and opens in Japan cinemas on October 30 from Culture Publishers.
