Culture Publishers is gearing up to release director Nobuo Mizuta’s latest action crime flick, Ryuji, in cinemas later this year. The project hails from Sedic International and stars Yuya Yagira from a concept born by Toru Kawashima’s 1983 movie, featuring writer and star, Shoji Kaneko who died from cancer a week after that film’s release.
The crux of the plot follows a young Yakuza and ex-convict who wants out of the underworld for the sake of his daughter. Word is that Kaneko even joined a gang to get a whiff of what the world entailed, and even featured his own child to play his character’s daughter. Additionally, the consensus to this day is that Kawashima’s film remains a celebrated gem.
As for Yagira’s own starrer, coverage currently bills the film per Mizuta as a fresh reinterpretation that doesn’t dare attempt to be a copy. To this, can this year’s Ryuji pass muster? Moviegoers will find out soon enough beginning October 30.
