SCOTT PILGRIM THE ANIME: Michael Cera Is Back To Battle Mary Elizabeth Winstead’s Exes For The New Netflix Anime Series

The word is out as of Thursday with a teaser and casting announcement for Scott Pilgrim The Anime, a new animated series that takes from Universal’s 2010 live-action adaptation of the hit graphic novel, Scott Pilgrim VS The World.

The series was announced last January, and hails from Netflix and Science SARU with actor Michael Cera returning to lead the voice cast line-up that includes the co-stars of the original, including Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Allison Pill, Aubrey Plaza, Anna Kendrick, Chris Evans, Satya Bhabha, Brandon Routh and many more.

Plot details remain pending but as novel and film lore tell it, the story centers on a garage band member whose slacker status says nothing of his willingness to chase girls. His latest catch is a spontaneous woman named Ramona, ultimately tying himself to a fate that will have him challenged by her seven evil exes, forcing him to confront himself in order to truly free Ramona of her baggage, as well as relinquish his own valor.

The novel’s originators, Bryan Lee O’Malley and BenDavid Grabinski, will serve as exec producers, writers and showrunners, with Scott Pilgrim VS The World helmer Edgar Wright exec producing next to Science SARU’s Eunyoung Choi and director Abel Gongora.

Quotes via Deadline:

“We’re getting the band back together!” said O’Malley and Grabinski in a joint statement. “A stellar cast, perfectly assembled by Edgar Wright. And, with Science SARU leading the phenomenal animation, we couldn’t ask for a better team for this adventure. We can’t wait for fans and newcomers alike to see what we and our partners at Science SARU have been cooking up. It’s going to be a wild ride.”

“One of the proudest and most enjoyable achievements of my career was assembling and working with the dynamite cast of Scott Pilgrim,” Wright added. “Since the film’s release in 2010 we’ve done Q&A’s, remembrances and charity read throughs, but there was never the occasion to reunite the whole gang on an actual project until now. Original creator Bryan Lee O’Malley, along with writer Ben David Grabinski have conjured up an anime series of Scott Pilgrim that doesn’t just expand the universe, but also…well, just watch it. I’m more than happy to announce that I have helped coax the entire original cast back to voice their characters on this epic new adventure. You are in for a treat.”

“It’s official … we’ve been obsessed with Scott Pilgrim!” said Choi. “This series has been a wild ride, full of fresh and thrilling experiences for everyone at Science SARU. Working with such amazing artists and animators under the visionary leadership of director Abel Gongora has been an absolute dream come true. Our team is over the moon about bringing the Scott Pilgrim world to life. We can hardly contain our excitement … this is going to be epic!”
