Sony Already On The Way With A SPIDER-MAN: INTO THE SPIDER VERSE Sequel And Spin-Off

Adaptations of Marvel IPs, Silk and Gina Prince-Bythewood’s developing crossover, Silver & Black, has been on the back of my mind going into the coming year with all things Spider-Man. However, Sony is very much keen on weighing in the Marvel property, especially in the wake of its $822+ million dollar global box office success with Tom Hardy’s starring outing in Venom last month.

The latest THR report cites that a Spider-Verse sequel and spin-off are already in the works stemming from Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse. The current film, directed by Bob Perschietti, Peter Ramsey and Rodney Rothman, and voice-starring Shameik Moore (Dope, The Get-Down) is host to a raft of ensemble Spider-heroes joining in the A-story of Miles Morales’ quest to take the reigns of his predecessor, Peter Parker. That film rolls out on December 14 while no plot details are currently being outlined for either of the aforementioned films.

Joaquim Dos Santos (Avatar: The Last Airbender, Netflix’s Voltron: Legendary Defender) is directing the sequel from a script by David Callaham (The Expendables, Wonder Woman 1984, upcoming Zombieland 2). Lauren Montgomery (Voltron: Legendary Defender, Batman: Year One, Superman/Batman: Apocalypse) is in talks to helm the Spider-Gwen-centric female ensemble spin-off from a script to be written by Bek Smith (CBS series, Zoo).

Amy Pascal will return to produce with the involvement of Into The Spider-Verse producers Phil Lord and Chris Miller, with Avi Arad and Christina Steinberg also getting involved.

Venom, directed by Ruben Fleischer, opens on Digital HD December 11, and on Blu-Ray December 18.
