THE HIT LIST: August 19, 2019

The Hit List back for another week of impressive finds from around the world in stunt performance and indie action short content. This was particularly down to the wire as I fell short on time a bit but I’m happy to have pulled through on this some.

Vlad Rimburg

First things first though as we now take a look at a variety of stunt demo and performance reels and directing reels from some of today’s top and burgeoning professionals. This week’s playlist includes Bobby Holland Hanton, Zoltan Hodi, Aaron Hawley, Melissa Spolar, Camran Bostanabad, Selwyn Huqueriza, Ed Nathan Mecate, Helen Preston, Gee Alexander, Subin Choi, Darren Holmquist, Brittany Marcotte, Steve Morris, Timothy Flood, Tom Caserto, Allie Hetherington, Doug Armstrong, Ronin Skai, Mark Griffin Jr., Ashley Olivier, Leon Ngo, Thor Nielsen and pre-viz wiz and filmmaker Christopher Clark Cowan.

We’re light on promotional bits this week but we’ve actually been accomodated this time around with an exclusive clip from upcoming short revenge thriller, The Kill-Switch. Lead actor Anthony Javier and co-star Bronson Cameron take center stage with a fight clip peeled from the story of a man once pronounced dead before his return to avenge the murder of his family.

Javier also produced the project with partner Gina Macri, and is currently circulating the 20-minute thriller at festivals. I screened it myself over the weekend and it’s a noteworthy piece of work from some of Manitoba’s best and up-and-coming in stunt performance and film.

Peep the clip below.

Time to dip into the action with the latest comedic fisticuffs from Alex Chung with Dylan Rampulla in a stellar return to self-inflicting fight-heavy form in Hit Me (With A Stick), and another Vimeo offering from Stephen Koepfer and Paul Varacchi with action romp, Rewind.

Keeping the pace going just beneath, the playlist kicks off with John Du and Romain Canonne in a practice fight from choreographer Kefi Abrikh, and a pair of comparative side-by-side re-enactments by Flipkick Films with Wu Jing action hit, Fatal Contact, and Jon Callaway and A.J. Blackwell on Captain America: The Winter Soldier from David Cheung.

Following that is a melee of fight choreography sampling filmed and presented from a group led by Darren Holmquist on his own channel, a stellar fight reel featuring a knife-wielding Grant Powell, and Isa Cordeiro facing down Koji Nishiyama and Lenny Cruz in a test fight filmed by Jay Kwon.

Actor and martial artist Peter Pham reintroduces himself some with a few reuploads showcasing his deadly Wing Chun prowess and action choreo caliber while Red Ronin Productions swings into action with Assassin Swing, and Ermias Baraki presents Agent E over at Frappe Mortelle Productions.

Gerald Javier takes to the lens once more to present some original new tokusatsu a la Kamen Ramen Studios with designer Art Of Tran’s brainchild, Lupine Ranger, and Doghouse 73 Pictures steps back into Overtime with Michael Chin leading the in-house sequel short by James Lee.

From there we head back to South Africa with Bronwin October shepherding action comedy passion project, Ek Is Yster, prior to touching base with a Vlad Rimburg double header – firstly with Salef Celiz and Aiden Kennedy in The Boys and another revived oldie/goodie from the internets of yesteryear with fantasy action short, Wild.

Last and far from least is the completed six-part action thriller webseries, No Way Out, featuring star and producer Sean Baker and presented by his recently-launched Aneux Studios banner.
