THE INTERPRETER: Jake Gyllenhaal To Topline Action Thriller From Guy Ritchie

News fresh from the AFM ticker tape brings word of the casting of Academy Award nominee Jake Gyllenhaal (The Guilty, Prisoners, Source Code, Jarhead) for The Gentlemen helmer Guy Ritchie’s latest action-thriller, The Interpreter. Filming is set to commence on January 10, 2022, on location in Spain, with Ritchie directing from a script he co-wrote with Ivan Atkinson and Marn Davies.

In The Interpreter, Gyllenhaal will play Sergeant John Kinley, on his last tour of duty and teamed with Ahmed, a local interpreter, to survey the region. When their unit is ambushed on patrol, Kinley and Ahmed are the only survivors. With enemy combatants in pursuit, Ahmed risks his own life to carry an injured Kinley across miles of grueling terrain to safety. Back on U.S. soil, Kinley learns that Ahmed and his family were not given passage to America as promised. Determined to protect his friend and repay his debt, Kinley returns to the warzone to retrieve Ahmed and his family before the local militias reach them first.

Per the announcement: “Inspired by real-life conversations with soldiers and the interpreters who risk their lives every day to help them, renowned director Guy Ritchie will make these courageous men the focus of his next feature and imagines how far one US Sergeant could go to repay such a debt when his translator and friend is left behind.”

Ritchie and Atkinson are producing the film with STXfilms exec producing. STXinternational is handling international sales at the upcoming AFM, while CAA Media Finance and WME Independent have jointly taken U.S. rights with STX.

Just as he did on Wrath Of Man and The Gentlemen, Ritchie also penned the script with Atkins and Davies for his upcoming Jason Statham reunion, Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre. That film opens on January 21, 2022 from STXfilms.

Ritchie is repped by CAA and attorney Matt Saver. Gyllenhaal is repped by WME.
