The fate of Warner Bros.’ DCEU feature slate remains unclear. That’s not stopping Henry Cavill from loading his arms and swinging hard and heavy like he did in this summer’s Mission: Impossible – Fallout, a segue now as he makes his chartered approach toward toplining Netflix‘s eight-episode production of The Witcher, adapting Andrzej Sapkowski’s beloved short stories and novels.
Based on the best-selling fantasy series, The Witcher is an epic tale of fate and family. Geralt of Rivia, a solitary monster hunter, struggles to find his place in a world where people often prove more wicked than beasts. But when destiny hurtles him toward a powerful sorceress, and a young princess with a dangerous secret, the three must learn to navigate the increasingly volatile Continent together.
Cavill, who will lead the cast of The Witcher saga as Geralt of Rivia, comes full circle with his attachment to the series upon reportedly being a fan of Sapkowski’s work. The Witcher saga first emerged in polish sci-fi periodical, Fantastyka, in 1986, prior to the books taking shape in 1993.
Lauren Schmidt Hissrich (Marvel’s Daredevil, Marvel’s The Defenders, Umbrella Academy) will serve as showrunner and will executive produce. Alik Sakharov (House of Cards, Game of Thrones) who will direct four episodes is also executive producing while Alex Garcia Lopez (Marvel’s Luke Cage, Utopia) and Charlotte Brändström (Outlander, Counterpart, Disparue) will each direct two episodes.
The headlining actor of such films as Batman V. Superman: Dawn Of Justice, Justice League, The Man From U.N.C.L.E. and even once upon a time in The Count Of Monte Cristo will soon appear in Nomis alongside Sir Ben Kingsley and Stanley Tucci for director David Raymond. The actor co-founded Promethean Productions, along with his brother, Charlie Cavill and Ben Blankenship, to expand his involvement in all aspects of film, TV, and live events with a charitable component.
