It’s the film that led actress Viola Davis to receive CinemaCon’s Trailblazer Award this year, and it’s now at the forefront of Sony Picutures’ latest campaign with The Old Guard director Gina Prince-Bythewood’s newest period war thriller, The Woman King. The official trailer is now online with Davis front and center with Thuso Mbedu, Lashana Lynch, John Boyega, Sheila Atim and Hero Fiennes Tiffin also starring.

The Woman King is the remarkable story of the Agojie, the all-female unit of warriors who protected the African Kingdom of Dahomey in the 1800s with skills and a fierceness unlike anything the world has ever seen. Inspired by true events, The Woman King follows the emotionally epic journey of General Nanisca (Oscar®-winner Viola Davis) as she inspires the King to take on the enemies determined to violate their honor and destroy their way of life. Some things are worth fighting for…

Co-writer Prince-Bythewood directs from a script storied by Maria Bello and co-written by Dana Stevens. Cathy Schulman produced the pic with Davis alongside Julius Tennon and Bello, with Peter McAleese exec producing.

The Woman King opens in theaters September 16 from Sony Pictures.
