WOMAN KING: ‘The Old Guard’ Director Gina Prince-Bythewood Crowned To Helm Viola Davis Period Actioner
It may have taken a few years and some change to put together, but now it looks as if TriStar’s long-awaited production of Woman King is getting some traction. With the casting of actress Viola Davis, Justin Kroll at Variety reports that Gina Prince-Bythewood will direct the female-fronted period actioner based on true events.
Gina Prince-Bythewood’s new Netflix action thriller adaptation, The Old Guard, is revving up at Netflix and is currently underway with casting announcements and this summer’s production.
Sony’s upcoming incarnation, Silver & Black, has reportedly landed two prime screenwriters in the form of Lindsey Beer (upcoming Chaos Walking) and Geneva Robertson-Dworet (upcoming Tomb Raider), according to The Hollywood Reporter. Both are following up from a previous draft written by Thor scribe Christopher Yost who preceded that of writer Gina Prince Bythewood (The Secret Life Of Bees) who is set to direct.
Previous reports in the past few months from sites including The Hashtag Show and Omega Underground have revealed that principal photography is set to commence this March through June under the working title “Tri-Border”, with locations in Atlanta, Georgia along with some scenes in Mexico. A February 8, 2019 has been bookmarked for the film’s release with Sony’s Matt Tolmach and Amy Pascal are producing.
Marvel set Silver Sable (a.k.a. Silver Sablinova) in 1985, created by Tom DeFalco and Ron Frenz with advanced skills in weapons, hand-to-hand combat and strategy, as the leader the Wild Pack: a group of mercenaries whose m.o. is to hunt down international war crimimals. Launched in 1971 by Keith Pollard and Marv Wolfman, Black Cat (a.k.a. Felicia Hardy) was the daughter of a world-renowned cat burglar and became her alter-ego after surviving a traumatic experience, ultimately forging her prowess in fighting and acrobatics.
The film marks another step forward in the studio’s commitment to its end on all things Spider-Man and Marvel with Tom Holland set for a follow-up to Spider-Man: Homecoming, Tom Hardy’s Venom this October, and the animated action adventure, Spider-Man: Into The Spidey-Verse this December.
Casting news remains pending on Silver And Black, one of Sony Pictures’s currently-brewing Marvel adaptations for which Gina Prince-Bythewood (Love & Basketball, The Secret Life Of Bees, Freeform’s Cloak & Dagger – pilot) will direct. Until then, the word now is that the studio has officiated several release dates for up-and-coming titles, including the new comic book adaptation which Bythewood is penning from Thor scribe Christopher Yost’s previous draft.
A February 8, 2019 has been bookmarked for Silver And Black, for which Sony’s Matt Tolmach and Amy Pascal are producing with Columbia Pictures executives Palak Patel and Eric Fineman are overseeing. Silver Sable (a.k.a. Silver Sablinova) was launched at Marvel in 1985, created by Tom DeFalco and Ron Frenz. Skilled in weapons, hand-to-hand combat and strategy, she leads the Wild Pack, a group of mercenaries whose m.o. is to hunt down international war crimimals, while her loyalty to Spider-Man in the comics is known to be fleeting.
Sable is a character lesser known in the comics compared to Black Cat, launched in 1971 by Keith Pollard and Marv Wolfman and who shares a deeper, complicated romantic history with the popular wall-crawling hero from Queens. Black Cat (a.k.a. Felicia Hardy) was the daughter of a world-renowned cat burglar and became her alter-ego after surviving a traumatic experience, ultimately forging her prowess in fighting and acrobatics.
Silver & Black is being conceived seperately from the studio’s current advancement of actor Tom Holland’s titular portrayal of third-time effort, Spider-Man, now per Marvel’s MCU at Walt Disney Pictures. The film will follow Zombieland helmer Reuben Fleischer’s forthcoming Venom movie which has Tom Hardy starring and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story co-star Riz Ahmed in talks for a yet undisclosed role.
Sony has also switched and removed dates for other titles: Releasing in place of the long-gestating/now undated Bad Boys For Life on November 9, 2018 is Etan Cohen’s Holmes & Watson with Step Brothers pair Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly starring. Stefano Sollima’s Soldado will bow on June 29, 2018 with Benecio Del Toro and Josh Brolin reprising their roles from Denis Villeneuve’s hit crime thriller, Sicario. Michelle MacLaren’s feature World War II novel adaptation, The Nightingale will has moved back its August 10, 2018 date to January 25, 2019. (Deadline via Exhibitor Relations)
Of course latter had been stirring since 2014 and just this year it was confirmed that mercenary Silver Sable and boundless burglar Black Cat would be at the center of the film. Thus, assuring the female-driven affair of Sony’s forthcoming Marvel adaptation, the aptly titled Silver & Black, comes Thursday’s hiring of Gina Prince-Bythewood (Love & Basketball, The Secret Life Of Bees, Freeform’s Cloak & Dagger – pilot) to direct the film. She will also re-pen Christopher Yost’s script with Matt Tolmach and Amy Pascal producing, and Columbia Pictures executives Palak Patel and Eric Fineman are overseeing.
