Universal's Monsterverse Adds Brit List's JAY BASU

It’s taken a few years to work on, but with Gary Shores’s Dracula Untold now off-setting Universal Pictures’s slate of monster reboot flicks as of October, producers Alex Kurtzman and Chris Morgan are ready to move things forward just a bit more. That said, word from Deadline has it that Jay Basu is being added to help devlop the studio’s cinematic monsterverse, with Kurtzman already lined up to helm a reboot of The Mummy for the studio.

Despite being an unknown, Basu‘s name was one that stood out from The Brit List – a list of unproduced screenplays and their writers much like The Black List. He has just a few publicly known credits according to SuperHeroHype, including co-writing the 2011 drama, The Pier, co-directing Monsters: Dark Continent, and completing a Brit List script for GBH (Grosse Bodily Harm), a 70’s crime thriller with Dredd 3D helmer Pete Travis set to direct.
There isn’t much else to go on here, although with plans in motion to fuse Dracula, The Mummy, The Wolfman and others into an action-packed franchise similar to Disney’s Marvel movies and Universal’s own Fast And Furious saga, perhaps the studio has found something worthwhile in Basu. It’s still early days for the franchise while the Black List’s Jon Sphaits’s script for Kurtzman’s The Mummy is due on its new date set for June 24, 2016 with another unannounced project for April 21, 2017. Stay tuned for more info!
