I gladly admit that I wished actress Angelina Jolie reprised her role in a third Tomb Raider movie – not so much the second film but the first. Still, I find it interesting that the nearly two-decade old game property from Eidos and Square Enix is in the works for a cinematic reboot, and in today’s film climate, it pretty much makes sense.
The new direction the game franchise is making is through the story of a younger, untested Lara Croft in the years before she became an internationally savvy archeologist and survivalist in her adventures. It’s also the vision The Wave helmer Roar Uthaug will be forseeing as of last November for MGM, Warner Bros and GK Films while a casting for a leading lady remained up in the air.
Of course, that was until Star Wars franchise lead, Daisy Ridley’s recently reported possible attachment to the role last month which turned out to be nothing more than a ruse; The word now is that Oscar-winning actress Alicia Vikander has been the choice all along, only reportable now on behalf of the fact that the production was still working toward the right script.
Alas, there aren’t any other details as of yet, but the news is now out in the open for the court of public opinion to weigh in. Having earned her praise for her recent roles in Tom Hooper’s The Danish Girl and in the sci-fi drama, Ex-Machina, and with forthcoming roles in this summer’s Jason Bourne, comment below and tell us what you think of the new Lara Croft!
