VARIANT: Li Qilin’s Chinese Sci-Fi Actioner Lands Multiple Territories Out Of TIFFCOM

Cappu Films

Big things happened this week for the good folks at Cappu Films shopping their slate at TIFFCOM out of the 39th Tokyo International Film Festival. Par for the course is sci-fi action thriller, Variant, directed by Li Qilin and opened in China back in December and will now have a pending North American release from International Media Network.

“Variant” follows Jamie, who lived through an alien creature’s attack on board a spacecraft. Twenty years after fleeing to Earth, he comes face to face with a new variant of the creature and has to confront the threat that wiped out his family.

Li directs Variant from a script he wrote for a cast led by Jim Liu, Shuting Yang and Philippe Joly. Sales also extend to Latin America and across Europe according to Variety’s Naman Ramachandran.

“We’re delighted to bring ‘Variant’ to audiences across a growing number of international markets,” said Janice Woo of Cappu Films. “We had a great experience working with the director and production team on ‘Mutant,’ so it’s a pleasure to work together again on ‘Variant.’ We like building relationships with filmmakers that continue from one film to the next.”
