The last there was of a big screen adaptation of Alexandre Dumas’s classic French swashbuckler, The Count Of Monte Cristo – at least I know of, was in 2002 with Jim Caviezel and Guy Pearce from Touchstone. It was pretty terrific in large part, save for the final act which I thought was a bit abrupt, and with a great take on the story that kept me watching.
That very story is set in the early 1800’s and so sixteen years since then, we now have news of a new iteration in development now at Warner Bros. according to a report at Deadline. Safehouse Pictures’ own Tory Tunnell and Joby Harold are producing from a script to be written by WGN series Underground creator Joe Polaski that will place the story of Edmond Dantès and Fernand Mondego in a modern-day criminal underworld setting with The Signal helmer William Eubank directing.
Modern day sword fights? Probably not. But, being the martial arts fan that I am, I would welcome it if that’s the case. Otherwise, I surely hope for something gripping and proper for a revenge thriller of this nature. I’m kind of stoked!
