WATCH DOGS Is Announced For A Big Screen Adaptation

Just as much as 2013 became a year loaded with action movie news, it also became a year of video game movie announcements, with such titles moving forward in development for the big screen as Assassin’s Creed, Splinter Cell, Ghost Recon, Spy Hunter and Lara Croft: Tomb Raider to name a few. But the industry is not done aiming to impress consumers yet, according to a new report swirling around the internet regarding the much-anticipated E3 ’12/’13 title favorite, Watch Dogs.

The Heat Vision column at THR states that Sony Pictures Entertainment, New Regency and the motion pictures branch at Ubisoft are collaborating to bring the game to life in feature film format, focused on the story of a hacker on a mission to avenge his family. Driven by vengeance, he gains control of Chicago’s entire infrastructure to keep surveillance on the city to dispense his own brand of justice. However, in doing so, he ultimately becomes a vigilante, with every function at his disposal.
The film was announced at GamesCom this week where president of production for Columbia Pictures, Hannah Minghella, was on hand to speak on behalf of the project.“The themes and open gameplay of ‘Watch Dogs’ lends itself perfectly to the big screen,” she said. “The game has intense action and adventure, but the story focuses on information and the control of information, which we think will lead to an exciting thriller. It has tremendous potential as a motion picture.”

Playstation Lifestyle also shared the new trailer which highlights the hacker group, DeadSec, featured in the game. The game is set to release this November.

In other Sony-related news, the televsion branch of the company is also partnering with Columbian-owned Teleset to produce 70 episodes adapting Machete Kills director Robert Rodriguez’s classic 1993 bullet ballet action thriller, El Mariachi. The show will air on Sony Entertainment Television with U.S. network airing plans still in the works.
