Your Next Viewing: ABIGAIL

All around, things are changing. Stores are limiting their hours, places like restaurants and gyms have closed. Some people have been laid off from their jobs. So how are you spending your time if you’re not working or are quarantined at home? How about watching a good film (or more than one)?

Well Go USA Entertainment’s Abigail is now available on Blu-ray, DVD, and digital, and if you like adventure, fantasy, and steampunk, you’ve got to see this one!

When townspeople start dying from a mysterious illness, Abigail’s town closes itself off from the outside world and takes away everyone infected with the disease, including Abigail’s beloved father, to be executed. Ten years later, as she’s trying to escape the town’s security forces, Abby uncovers a shocking truth – her father may still be alive. Filled with danger and discoveries, Abby sets out on a magical steampunk adventure that overturns everything she once knew about the world, her family and even herself.

This was a fun film to watch. I loved the special effects and how pretty and whimsical it all looked. There were times when the visuals reminded me of The Golden Compass and times when the feel of the world and characters reminded me of Alice in Wonderland.

I realize the irony of suggesting you view a film in which the town is infected with a mysterious disease while you yourself are either social distancing or quarantining to avoid a virus, but this film is neither depressing nor dark. It is fun and action-packed.

It is not perfect though. It’s worth noting that the country of origin for this film is Russia, even though it is in English. In the scenes when Abigail is young and talking with her father, the dialogue is very smooth and feels natural as though they are native English speakers. However, in the scenes of when Abigail is older, the language is not as natural. The phrasing is awkward at times and it feels like something happened in the translation. The film is still enjoyable though; I think the difference of the language added to the feeling that Abigail’s world is very different than mine.
