“For years we have transgressed on Native American burial sites
now something mythological is fighting back….”
Would you go into a forest steeped in spooky tales to find a missing person? Would your answer be any different if the missing person was your son?
Lore, directed by Christian Larsen and Brock Manwill, is heavily influenced by stories of the Lakota tribe. But it is so much more than a tale of a search party. Larsen and Manwill released an official statement explaining that:
“We were fortunate enough to have cast members from three different Native American nations…each of them brought authenticity and elevated our film in both performance and spirit…while Lore is meant to be a scary story, our hope is that one can come away from it knowing that no matter what path of life’s questions you find yourself on, you are not alone.”
To put it simply, here is the official synopsis:
A woman searches for her missing son in a remote wilderness with the help of her estranged husband and a Native American guide. When an evil creature starts to hunt them, their journey becomes a fight for survival.
Overall, I enjoyed this film. The storyline of a forest with a mysterious creature in it may not be the most unique, but the integration of the Native American legend was. The members of the search party performed well together so I could feel their worry and fear. I especially liked the chemistry between the mom (Lindsey Lantz) and dad (Max Lesser). I could feel the tension between her and her estranged husband in my living room while watching.
There were times, however, that the film moved too slowly for me. I wanted to see more of the people being taunted or stalked by the creature. I needed to hear more of the tales. Eric’s leaving and disappearing felt like it happened too fast, but by comparison, his parents’ time in the woods felt too slow as at times there was not enough action. The ending, however, was fitting and not completely predictable. It left me wanting more and definitely feeling the urge to research Native American legends.
If you’re a fan of haunted forest films or a fan of Native American stories, you should give this one a try.
