LORD OF THE RINGS Series In Talks At Amazon
Warner Bros. Pictures
Ready to return to Middle Earth?
Variety reported exclusively last week that efforts were underway to get the engine running for a serial offering of Lord Of The Rings at Amazon. Warner Bros. Television and the estate of late author J.R.R. Tolkien are reportedly spearheading talks with Amazon Studios and Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos – talks which are still in the early stages with no deals signed as of yet.
The report at Variety suggests its a rarity for Bezos to be engaged in talks for a project, but otherwise understandable in the wake of several executive departures at Amazon, including Roy Price following accusations of sexual harassment made early last month by a producer of The Man In The High Castle. The show also falls in line with a programming mandate from Bezos, aimed away from niche, naturalistic programmimg and toward broader shows with more international appeal.
Tolkien’s mythopoeic novels telling of a heroic fellowship of warriors who set out to protect a grouping of hobbits on a quest to destroy the One Ring against the wills of evil forces led by Dark Lord Sauron were published in 1954 and 1955. Warner Bros. Pictures adaptated the novels for the big screeen with much avail as a milestone award-winning box office success that would soon follow Jackson’s prequel trilogy success, The Hobbit, between 2012 and 2014.
