I’ve been covering filmmaker and stunt professional Kevin Barile for well over a decade now. He’s always had a strong eye for what conceptually works or looks awesome as a feature film project which is something I’d always hope to see come to fruition.
As of late, among at least two of his current scripts, his latest stop is new action horror thriller, Cromwell Mansion. Barile also filmed pitch trailer, which he exclusively revealed to attendees in L.A. for the Big Bad Film Fest over the weekend, which also premiered his latest action comedy shortfilm, “The Mime,” which you can read more about here.
“It was an eventful, fun weekend over at Big Bad Film Fest. Patrick and Powell put on a killer festival as usual. They rock,” said Barile in a statement to FCSyndicate of the event and its founders, Patrick Young and Powell Robinson.
The fourth edition of Big Bad was held at its regular Los Angeles venue where the pitch trailer for Cromwell Mansion. The pitch played in front of the festival’s twentieth anniversary screening of Isaac Florentine’s Undisputed II: Last Man Standing, for which actor Michael Jai White and fight choreographer J.J. Perry were also in attendance.
“Patrick and Powell seem to truly love to help and highlight action creators. They love action movies,” he said. “And their attendees are action filmmakers and action movie-lovers so, if I was only going to show it once for my cast and crew, Big Bad seemed like the perfect place to premiere the trailer.”
Barile added, “The trailer played strong with a powerful sound mix at the Look Dine-In Theater in Glendale. It really showcased well all of the hard work and long post-production hours that me and my sound designer Francois put into it. The biggest win for me at the end of the screening is that it looked like Cromwell Mansion was a real movie that is coming out soon.”
Plot details about Cromwell Mansion are under wraps, but the footage hints at a home invasion heist thriller caught in a murder plot that comes back to haunt them. What follows midway after that set up is a sample of the kind of fight scene action and spectacle that Barile is known for putting together. He’s also looking to start production as soon as possible, provided he can help get on board whoever will help bring financing to the table, while he continues to tinker with the script.
“I have $50K pledged towards a roughly $500K budget. I have the perfect location picked out and scouted and I’ve teamed up with a couple of different producers that are helping me through the process,” said Barile, who is also ruling out crowdsourcing.
“If it was a smaller budget it might have been something I considered but since the scope of the movie is a little bigger, we are trying to finance the movie through more traditional means,” he added.
The cast of the Cromwell Mansion trailer includes Max Reeves, Mostafa Elmorsy, Maxim Alayra, Ash Tsai, Robert Dill, and Mario Rocha, and features stunts by Davis Chone, Ed Nathan Mecate who played the title character in Barile’s The Mime, and John Tieng. Director of photography Tony Diaz handled lensing with Andrei Litvinov pulling focus as first assistant camera, Will Giron serving as gaffer, and François Blaignan as Barile’s sound designer. Barile assembled, choreographed and edited the action.
