Casting is now underway for a reboot of the hit 90s TV show, WMAC Masters. The project, which celebrates the show’s 30th anniversary, is still in early development with James Sang Lee (Mortal Kombat: Conquest, Plane) and WMAC Masters veteran Carmichael “Kid Carmichael” Simon (“Red vs. Blue,” “RWBY”) executive producing for Cannon Entertainment Group. The update is the latest in a series of steps for development of the show with a new merchandising endeavor underway over at Kickstarter shepherded by SMAT Designs, whose Scott Manthey is also an exec producer. Kristopher Landis, author of the 2022 paperback, “Quest for the Dragon Star: An Oral History of WMAC Masters,” is penning the series. Filmed at Universal Studios in Orlando, the scripted tournament format was set in a fictional world where the connection, hosted by Shannon Lee, pitted world class martial artists against one another donning “ki” symbols in their fight for the […]
There’s a new independent series that’s been in the works since the Covid-19 pandemic had the world locked down and indoors for a year. That project is now off to its next phase over at Seed & Spark from creative duo Marcus Lawrence and exec producer Nate Nelson for Pulp Heroes, billed as a shared comic book universe seen through a progressive lens. Pulp Heroes is an action series that explores themes of vigilantism, corruption, and the deterioration of society. This crime thriller is as relevant to modern culture as it was when these characters were first introduced in the pulp comic medium over 70 years ago. We want to educate and inspire while creating a community for the persecuted, neglected, and disheartened. Lawrence crafted the project with partner Matt Broche at the top of the now five-year process in which the duo developed the screenplay, laid the groundwork for […]

Indie production label Whirlwind Action has been a bookmark for me long before I started writing this platform twelve years ago. I’ve proudly covered their work ever since with in-house director and performer Micah Brock then cranking out the finale to his hit weberies series, Slug Street Scrappers, in 2013, before releasing in the summer a year later. Brock had plans over the years for other projects as well, but only recently took to his latest endeavor, Slug Street Scrappers: Regen, initially billed as a new series continuing the original. That was in 2022, and Brock has since evolved his earlier vision into feature film fruition with post-production underway, as well as a new Indiegogo campaign to keep the movie afloat. The first several installments of Slug Street Scrappers headlined a bevy of then-burgeoning indie action and stunt talent under the stewardship of Brock and series cohort Shaun Charney. Such […]
The past year or so have seen my news feeds crackling a little with word of emerging talent, actor, martial artist, and newly-inducted Black Belt Hall Of Famer Nathan Geering. He’s got a feature film in development called The Lock In, and his Indiegogo pitch certainly reads like something right up my alley. A man trapped in a pub finds himself caught in the crossfire between a mysterious bartender and a gang hell bent on killing him at any cost. To make matters worse our hero has arranged to go on a romantic date at the pub. When his date arrives things immediately take a turn for the worse as the pub closes it’s doors and holds a deadly event known as The Lock In. What started out as a romantic evening turns into a fight for survival. Geering has won a ton of awards for his shortfilm work, most […]
Actress, writer and producer Isabel Lamers is on a mission to bring representation to the big screen with independent martial arts drama, Filipino Karate Kid. She has a Kickstarter campaign already underway for the project which went up a few weeks ago and thus, has about a few weeks left as of this write up. Half-Filipina Nia craves to belong ever since she left the Philippines as a teen. When she discovers a local Filipino martial arts gym, where as a Kickboxer she hopes to finally fit in, but not under the watch of queen pin gym-owner Angel who worked hard to be in the position she is now. With the help of outcast FMA fighter, Malic, Nia trains FMA to prove herself to Angel, as well as to herself that she is indeed “Filipino enough”. At the same time, her superficial wanna-be upper class mother tries everything to make […]
Vietnam continues to be a place of surprise potential for action films over the last few decades. That’s not to say I know where indie director and stunt performer Leo Kei Angelos’s (“Marvel’s Jessica Jones,” Halloween Kills) new short is going, but it pays homage to the genre if the details available at his Seed And Spark campaign platform are any clue. The new short is called The Jump, and Angelos filmed it in the course of four shooting days within two weeks. Angelos filmed the short in Vietnam marking his return to the country after 20 years of climbing the ladder as an action actor and stunt performer, and independent filmmaker working in Los Angeles. As Angelos details it, The Jump is inspired by his own exploits growing up as an action fan watching Jackie Chan movies in the 90s. The story centers on a young Jackie Chan fan […]
It’s Friday. For some, it’s still a work day, while others might still be enjoying the Independence Day weekend. At any rate, folks keen on martial arts podcasts are welcome to pan over to Kick Back With Chris, hosted by Chris Jones. The series launched back in 2018, and I first talked about the show that year when I got to throw in a few seconds of some Jackie Chan love at the time for one episode. Jones’s podcast has since evolved a little bit with time and scheduling which has since allowed him to contribute a new adjacent subseries as of late March called Fight Scene Friday, where he and co-host Martin Wan break down and analyze fight scene faves from different films. The films whose scenes they’ve covered so far include Ong Bak (2003), Drunken Master 2 (1994), Rumble In The Bronx (1995), The Matrix (1999), Fist Of […]
A quick pivot here as we take a gander at some graphic novel assets with a new campaign by author Steven Yu for Joan. Yu doled out a taste for fans several years ago with a small digital preview, and now he’s following up with the completion of his pulpy, action-packed four part epic, with efforts to make Joan a reality now underway at Indiegogo. When the growing authoritarian might of her nemesis, the self-righteous English monarch, King Henry and his magic-wielding dark lords, The Burgundians, spread like wildfire across the medieval hellscape, God resurrects Joan of Arc to stop them. Enchanted with immortality and blessed with infinite ammo, Joan will stop at nothing until these villains are vanquished and peace is restored across France. JOAN is a 4-part graphic novel series set in an alternative 1430’s medieval France. It is a hodgepodge of genres, put together in one unique […]
