Macon Blair’s The Toxic Avenger revamp was another film I couldn’t catch along with the rest of the crowd at the eighteenth edition Fantastic Fest, and not for lack of trying. Word is though that the film’s level of violence and gore was inhabitable for distributors which is why some folks felt like they were taking crazy pills knowing full well at one point that a new movie was getting (or already) made. As of late, the film has a 92% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The company will also handle its international sales when the EFM launches in Berlin in February. Variety’s Naman Ramachandran got the exclusive word on Monday that Shout! Studios has acquired the global rights to Golden Princess library of Hong Kong classic films. That’s a reported number of 156 titles that the boutique label will have on its catalogue for the foreseeable future. It also means that films by auteurs such as John Woo, Ringo Lam and Eric Tsang – included in the library – will finally get restorations with a number of features, in addition to bumping up the label’s own streaming stock. This is a total win for a plethora of reasons, especially for anyone who has been championing the collection of physical media as long as the next person with the ever-foreshadowing posterity of streaming becoming a factor. Quiver Distribution announced today that it has acquired North American rights to the Anton and Qwerty Films production Cleaner, directed by Martin Campbell (Casino Royale, GoldenEye) and set in, around and on the side of one of the UK’s tallest buildings. Quiver will release the film in theaters on February 21, 2025. The film stars Daisy Ridley (the Star Wars franchise) who recently completed Magpie, based on a story she developed, with acclaimed roles in Young Woman and The Sea and Sometimes I Think About Dying, and Clive Owen (Children of Men, Closer), who recently starred in the FX mini-series A Murder at the End of the World. Screendaily’s Michael Rosser reports that action drama The Prosecutor will bow on January 10 in North America from Well Go USA. The news comes on the heels of the official trailer for the Donnie Yen-led flick ahead of its Hong Kong release on December 27. Yen directs and stars from a script by Edmond Wong, centered on a former cop-turned-prosecutor who sets out to right some wrongs when a wrongfully accused man is set to take the fall for a crime, facing pressure by forces on both sides of the law. Also starring are Julian Cheung, Kent Cheng, Adam Pak, and Kang Yu, with action and stunt sequences by Yu along with Yen and fellow action cohort Kenji Tanigaki. Read more at Screendaily.
Chinese actioner Striking Rescue is getting a theatrical release in the U.S. from Well Go USA. The Youku-produced actioner releases in the mainland through streaming service Youku this week featuring global martial arts star Tony Jaa. Directed by Cheng Siyi, the action revenge movie follows An Bai (Jaa), a veteran Muay Thai expert who goes on a take-no-prisoners mission of revenge after his wife and daughter are brutally murdered by mysterious forces. THR‘s Patrick Brzeski notes the film is the first in an effort for Youku’s planned expansion into theatrical releases for international markets. Great news is abound for anyone fond of jidaigeki films and Japanese cinema in whole. That at certainly goes for director Yu Irie whose latest, Muromachi Outsiders, has just been snapped by Well Go USA for North America. Muromachi Outsiders is Irie, and based on the 2016 Shincho Bunko series of novels from multi-award winning author, Ryosuke Kakine. Trinity CineAsia hit the ground running over the weekend announcing an October 11 theatrical release in the UK and Ireland for Hong Kong action drama, Stuntman. The film stars Terrance Lau and Philip Ng, along with stunt veteran Stephen Tung Wai, a seven-time winner of Best Action Choreography at the Hong Kong Film Awards, marking his latest return after seven years. The story follows a washed-up action choreographer who is struggling to find his way in a changing industry. He risks everything to stage a comeback, while also attempting to repair the relationship with his estranged daughter. Stuntman is co-directed by Albert and Herbert Leung, both real stuntmen-turned-filmmakers, who draw from their own professional experiences to create this dramatic, moving and inspiring story. Breaking Glass Pictures is releasing the new horror comedy thriller Hayride To Hell on digital and on demand beginning September 24. The film stars screen icons Bill Moseley (The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2, House of 1000 Corpses) and Kane Hodder (Friday the 13th franchise), in their latest work who previously worked together on Christian Winters/Alan Smithee’s Old 37 (2015). Every now and again, the guys and gals at Criterion – who are mostly known for releasing some rather high-brow cinema on Blu-ray – give action fans something special. Whether it’s their Police Story and Once Upon a Time in China releases or John Woo’s Last Hurrah for Chivalry, they certainly know their Hong Kong cinema. And so it should come as no surprise that, yesterday, Criterion announced they’ll be releasing Sammo Hung’s military actioner, EASTERN CONDORS, on shiny Blu-ray in December. Region locked US residents have been waiting for this once, since the only decent releasee as of late has been the Region B Eureka! Entertainment disc, which saw the film in a three-movie set with The Magnficent Butcher and The Iron-Fisted Monk. Criterion’s release will be standalone and, per usual, is jampacked with special features.
