‘Cobra Kai’ Co-Creator On Sony’s New KARATE KID Movie: ‘…This one isn’t from us’

Cobra Kai co-creator Jon Hurwitz took to social media to address Friday’s exciting news update pertaining to Sony Pictures’ upcoming slate, which so happens to include a new film installment for the Karate Kid franchise in 2024, as reported by multiple trade outlets. The news on Friday spawned mixed but curious reactions from fans of the franchise, including hit Netflix series Cobra Kai, which is now streaming its fifth season.

The guys and I would love to make Karate Kid and Cobra Kai movies and hope to someday. But this one isn’t from us or focused on the Cobra Kai cast. Don’t know much about it, but wish it well.

This likely confirms, at least tentatively until we know more, that the new film being planned won’t tie in to Cobra Kai as the show presses onto to what looks like will be a sixth season. It also reads like it may take a direction for its own incarnation, much like Harald Zwart’s own China-set reimagining of the property starring Jaden Smith and Jackie Chan in 2010, creative details pending, of course.
