As I’ve stated many times over (it’s even in my bio), I am a huge geek. I am in so many fandoms, I am surprised my brain hasn’t exploded with all the random knowledge and trivia tidbits I know from each one. It can be hard to find one’s tribe sometimes because even though being a geek seems to have become the cool thing to be lately, there are still those who like to pick on or make fun of us geeks for liking superheroes, video games, role playing games (the pen and paper ones, get your mind out of the gutter), etc.
For those like me who are looking for their people, a convention is the place to be. Even if you don’t talk to others in attendance, there is a sense of ease, like being home, being at a con and surrounded by people like you. I love conventions and so far have enjoyed Acen (Anime Central) a few times and attended C2E2 (Chicago Comic and Entertainment Expo) annually and it is my dream to one year make it to the Con of all cons: San Diego Comic Con.
And, thanks to the pandemic (who ever thought we’d say that?!), we can all attend it this year. You read that right: for the first time ever, Comic-Con will be online and did I mention that it is free? They have already begun to announce this year’s events which includes a virtual masquerade competition and about 350 panels. How will those work? According to the website:
“Once the daily schedules go live, you’ll be able to read the descriptions and decide what you’d like to see. The majority of our panels will also be available AFTER the July 22-26 dates, although there are some that may have a limited time period attached to them. Each panel will contain a link; when you click on that link, you’ll launch another page that has the panel video embedded on it … that video will be available on the date and time listed. When it’s available, simply push play and watch! It’s that simple.”
The schedule for Wednesday and Thursday are already available. The panels on these days include topics like “Comics in the Classroom,” “Conspiracy Theories and Propaganda Throughout Pop Culture,” “Art and the Holocaust,” the “Star Trek Universe Virtual Panel,” plus more. And there are more to be announced! Are you squeaking in anticipation yet? I am!
Be sure to keep checking the official website for more information as it is released. This year’s San Diego Comic-Con will run from July 22 to 25, with a preview night on the 21st. Don’t tell my boss, but I may have to call in sick in order to enjoy all the geekiness!
