DETOUR: Scripting Is Underway For The Sequel To The Stunt People’s Indie Martial Arts Comedy Classic, ‘Contour’
A sequel to the 2006 independent martial arts comedy classic, Contour, is in the works, according to star and director Eric Jacobus who teased the project over on his Discord channel. The move comes following the release of his latest book, “If These Fists Could Talk: A Stuntman’s Unflinching Take On Violence” which launched on digital and paperback on Amazon earlier this month.
“Researching Navajo and native economics while writing the sequel to Contour…” said Jacobus. The actor also revealed the film’s title, Detour, and stated that development began around September last year, and that he’s “stoked to leak details here as they come”. Plot details remain otherwise under wraps.
Contour was a beacon of accomplishment for fans of indie action cinema absorbed with a Hong Kong-style touch through a Western lens. The same can certainly be said of the film’s in-house production and stunt-training framework, The Stunt People, of which Jacobus was one of the founders.
The Mortal Kombat Legacy webseries and Death Grip actor plays Lawrence “Law” Young, a shiftless thug indebted to a weasley boss posturing himself as a martial arts pioneer. Forced to pick up the slack as a San Francisco tour guide, “Law” is thrust into a spell of fisticuffs and hijinks with a Chinese bodyguard (Andy Leung) to a child prince (Edward Kahana Jr.), and an Uzi-packing Bible journalist (Tyler Wang), as well as a ruthless gangster with a kickboxing leadfoot named Ticker (Dennis Ruel) and his henchmen when a salacious tape threatens to upend the prominent cheese industry of the unstable country of Uruvia. The film also starred Vlad Rimburg, Stephen Reedy, Ray Carbonel, Troy Carbonel, Todd Roy, Donovan Kendrick, and Steven Yu.
Shot on a shoestring budget of $5000 and a reliable stash of protein bars, nuts, water, and henchmen balaclavas, Jacobus wore numerous hats on the film, most of all writing, producing, choreographing, directing and starring in the film. The film would go on to win accolades across audiences and niche websites for The Stunt People, including recognition from Kung Fu Cinema’s Mark Pollard as “the premiere independent action studio”.
Jacobus independently released the movie on DVD prior to its acquisition by Indican in 2008, as well as Manga Entertainment for their digital rollout of the film in 2012 in the U.S.. A re-upped 4K version of the film’s director’s cut premiered on Jacobus’s YouTube channel last April.
