Director Tim Miller’s hit movie, Deadpool, won in epic fashion last weekend at the MTV movie awards, taking away accolades for Best Comedy and Best Fight – this all following its prime box office victory in becoming the highest grossing R-rated superhero movie, ever. So, what else is in tow? Well, the sequel was already announced for active development back in February before then, but as with all things in film, these updates take time to become solid. Thus, what better time than this week, and on the last day of CinemaCon in Las Vegas?
Yes, 20th Century Fox was on hand to make its case for several tentpole movies including Independence Day: Resurgence, Assassin’s Creed, and as many as four more sequels to James Cameron’s 2009 interplanetary spirtual sci-fi action epic, Avatar. Of course, Deadpool 2 was part of the roster as well with Ryan Reynolds back to star for Miller at the helm. The first film took things off in epic fashion with an almost full-frontal assault on film industry norms. And at the center of it all, Reynolds in the role of embattled cancer survivor and anti-hero Wade Wilson whose second chance at life garners enough desperation in a nefarious procedure that mutates and deforms him, turning him nearly invicible.
Watch the film for yourself and you’ll know that what ensues is an action free-for-all with all sorts of mature-filmmmaking muscles stretched in balls-to-the-wall comedy with winning action sequences by Netflix series Daredevil fight coordinator Philip J. Silvera. It was the film that fans demanded for nearly a decade, and promptly received, and while the production had a few setbacks for the first time around with a smaller budget, a signs may point to a larger budget with even bigger goals than before.
One such goal teased by Miller and producer Simon Kinberg this week was the prospect of a Deadpool/Spider-Man crossover teased during the Deadpool Blu-Ray and DVD press day. “Simon and I have been trying to build bridges.” said Miller whereas Kinberg stated, “I would love to see it. Both of us are close with [Marvel’s] Kevin [Feige], we respect and love Kevin. If it were even remotely possible, we will find a way ’cause we’d would love to see it.”
At current, that particular crossover is not official, although not too far from reality either if the cards are played right, and for an R-rated Spidey with Tom Holland in costume apart from his current obligation to Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War titles and Spider-Man: Homecoming, this could be something. For now, it is what it is, and Deadpool 2 is officially happening. So that’s that, and for better or worse, get ready for more parental protests for a PG-13 sequel too. Because people are that lame.
