The infamous “merc with a mouth” otherwise known as Deadpool has been a major subject of discussion over the last several years. Having been featured in the 2009 film, X-Men Origins: Wolverine by actor Ryan Renyolds, the character went on to become the very center of its own fan-driven movement for a self-titled film to do it justice.
Test footage from Blur Studios also leaked online a few months back before 20th Century Fox pulled it. However, much to the favor of fans, the footage proved to be every bit as impressive as they hoped it would be, and it obviously left the fans wanting more, especially with the hopes of an R-rated production. As it stands now, the R-rating might still up in the air, but the news is now officially breaking for the film’s dated release set for February 12, 2016.
Zombieland scribes Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick are posied to write the script for the film which was announced back in 2009 with Renyolds reprising his role and VFX artist Tim Miller in the director’s chair as of 2011. Ironically, the character was also confirmed for an appearance in Kick-Ass 2 helmer Jeff Wadlow’s forthcoming production of X-Force as of late last year as well.
Today’s news happened to break just a few hours after Renyolds offered his feedback on the mo-cap CG-hybrid test footage in a statement to Niagra Falls Review. “There was such an overpowering reaction to the footage, you sort of feel like, ‘Oh, so we weren’t crazy for our reasons for loving this character, for loving this role.’ It’s interesting to see the power of the Internet. It’s awe-inspiring, actually,” Reynolds says. “And it’s neat that Twitter and Facebook and Instagram can move mountains when used in the right way.”
The character was originally created by artist Rob Liefeld and comic book writer Fabian Nicieza as a villain back in 1991 before evolving through the years as an anti-hero. There’s no word yet on what direction the new script will take following the character’s appearance in 2009 opposite Hugh Jackman, although for an R-rated vision, it’s reasonable to believe Miller‘s film will be as equally surprising as what was leaked on the internet, if not WAY more.
