Director Na Hyun will follow up his 2017 feature directing debut, The Prison, now tackling spy action thriller, Demon (a.k.a Yacha), according to Pierce Conran at KOFIC. Filming is abound with a cast that currently enlists veteran film star Sol Kyung-gu (Memoir Of A Murder, 1987: When The Day Comes), and actor Park Hae-soo (The Pirates, By Quantum Physics: A Nightlife Venture) for what so far looks to be a 2020 release.
Demon tells the story of Ji-hoon, a former Seoul prosecutor demoted to an office in Shenyang, China where he goes toe-to-toe with Kang-in, an elusive, ruthless NIS ghost operative who plays (and kills) by his own rules. This reads especially like the kind of film that fans of Na’s work could go for, especially now that he’s proven himself with The Prison, a delightful action crime thriller that stars Kim Rae-won who is inarguably one of the best action stars working today.
Kim followed suit last year with Kang Yoon-sung’s rousing actioner, Long Live The King, the live-action adaptation of webtoon about a crime boss who, in the face of romantic rejection, turns over a new leaf with an in-roads to a career in politics, and local heroism. Among his career accolades, the film earned the actor a Best Actor award at last year’s premiere Chungbuk International Martial Arts And Action Film Festival.
Sol, who exited 2019 with action comedy, Man Of Men, also led the charge in Lee Su-jin’s crime procedural, Idol, which took the coveted Cheval Noir Award at last year’s Fantasia Festival in Montreal, as well as accolades at Berlin, Sitges, L’Etrange in Paris, and at AFI. The actor is also slated to reunite with The Merciless director Byun Sung-hyun for period political thriller, King Maker, as well as star in Two Policemen, Fists Of Legend director Kang Woo-suk’s own Joseon period revival of 90s crime franchise, Two Cops.
Showbox Corp. which handled The Prison for its local release, will also distribute Demon.
