DRAGONLORD: New Action Adventure In The Works From ‘Kung Fury’ Director
Action adventure Dragonlord is in development from actor and filmmaker David Sandberg. The project, financed by Supercell co-founder Mikko Kodisoja, is still being written and will film in the new year.
The story follows a character known as Dragonlord (to be played by Sandberg), a treasure-obsessed hunter whose best friend is a Tyrannosaurus Rex called Blaze. Rather than hunt for yet more treasure, however, Blaze just wants to hang out and play video games, but when he’s kidnapped by the evil Dreadmancer (think He-Man’s archenemy Skeletor), Dragonlord must pull together an Avengers-like team of bonkers heroes to save his dino buddy.
“It’s a really fun, really rich world with a lot of funny characters,” says Sandberg. “It’s tonally similar to ‘Kung Fury’.”
The news comes in the wake of Sandberg teasing the new project to the trades and revealing the recent years of ordeals following extensive legal proceedings and hampering due to his impasse with co-financier Creasun USA over post-production of Kung Fury: The Movie. Sandberg reprises his role from the hit 2015 shortfilm released online through his Laser Unicorn label, casting the likes of Michael Fassbender, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Alexandra Shipp, and Eiza Gonzalez among the roster.
That story came about during Cannes with the leak of a spoilery ten-minute sizzle reel that’s still circulating online to this day despite efforts to assure the footage’s secrecy. Sandberg reportedly remains otherwise optimistic that the film will be completed and released to audiences in full despite the circumstances.
