EL POTRO DE VALLECAS: Spanish Boxing Biopic Underway At Netflix
Principal photography is already underway at Netflix for Spanish boxing biopic, El Potro de Vallecas. Miguel Herrán (La casa de papel, Modelo 77) will star in the role of boxing legend Policarpo ‘Poli’ Díaz, headlining a script by Carlos Franco for director Daniel Calparsoro (Hasta el cielo, Asalto al Banco Central).
Inspired by true events, the film follows the life of Policarpo “Poli” Díaz (Miguel Herrán), a young man from Vallecas who, despite a childhood marked by poverty and family violence, became a boxing legend in 1980s Spain, even fighting for the world lightweight title. But success and fame drew him into a world of excess, where drugs and poor decisions threatened to destroy everything he had achieved. It is a story of rise and fall, where Poli’s greatest fight will be against himself.
Production was announced last week Friday so here’s to another one of those better-late-than-never posts. Shooting locations include various parts of Madrid and Segovia.
“This is a fast-paced story about the struggle of a young man who comes from nothing—a boxer who rises to the top of his sport and fame, but lacks the cultural and emotional tools to handle his success. It’s the story of a young man facing his own demons, who became the people’s champion and a symbol of overcoming adversity.”
