FREE GUY Sequel: 20th Century Studios President Confirms Development

A Free Guy sequel is confirmed in development at 20th Century Studios, as confirmed by studio president Steve Asbell in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter on Thursday. The interview, published by Borys Kit, focused on Asbell’s own 20th anniversary with 20th Century, it’s addition into the Disney family, and its future going forward with films in both theatrical and streaming mediums.

In response to Kit’s question regarding how many productions would be planned annually, Asbell noted that the studio is “navigating the marketplace like everyone else”, citing there would be two or three movies in development per year with IPs such as AvatarPlanet of the Apes and Free Guy having “well-established theatrical precedence for a wide audience.” On the film’s status he adds: “We’re awaiting a script that is days away. It’s a fantastic story.”

Free Guy finally theatrically released in August last year after multiple delays due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Shawn Levy directed the action-packed Ryan Reynolds sci-fi starrer from a script by Matt Lieberman and Zak Penn, telling of a non-playable character who awakens to his own autonomy and learns the truth about the MMORPG he lives in, and the fate that awaits his world if he and his allies in the real world can’t pull the plug on a devastating sequel launch.

The film also stars Jodie Comer, Lil Rel Howery, Joe Keery, Taika Watiti and Utkarsh Ambudkar. A day after its release, Reynolds announced the studio was in the works for a sequel.

Levy and Reynolds later rejoined for the production of The Adam Project, which will debut on Netflix from March 11.
