It’s been more than a month since the official announcement of production in New Zealand for the forthcoming manga adaptation, Ghost In The Shell. The conversation surrounding it has been immensely heated regarding the topic of diversity in Hollywood and the catalyst, of course, is the casting of actress Scarlett Johansson in the lead role based on Shirow Masamune’s classic manga.

Needless to say and regardless of anyone’s opinion, Paramount Pictures and DreamWorks Pictures are moving forward on it with director Rupert Sanders at the helm, and a release date stamped for March 31, 2017. Thus, more updates may arise between now and then, while in the meantime we can now share the news via THR that The Wolverine and CW series Arrow co-star, actress Fukushima Rila has been cast in the film, details on her role pending.

Based on the internationally-acclaimed sci-fi property, “GHOST IN THE SHELL” follows the Major, a special ops, one-of-a-kind human-cyborg hybrid, who leads the elite task force Section 9. Devoted to stopping the most dangerous criminals and extremists, Section 9 is faced with an enemy whose singular goal is to wipe out Hanka Robotic’s advancements in cyber technology.

Johansson and Fukushima are joined by the cast of characters listed as follows: Kitano Takeshi as Daisuke Aramaki, Juliette Binoche as Dr. Ouelet, Michael Pitt as Kuze, Pilou Asbæk as Batou, and Kaori Momoi, with Section 9 members of Section 9 played by Chin Han, Danusia Samal, Lasarus Ratuere, Izumihara Yutaka and Tuwanda Maniyimo.
