Scarlett Johansson Will Not Be Controlled In The Second Official GHOST IN THE SHELL Trailer
The latest trailer for Rupert Sanders’s manga/anime adaptation, Ghost In The Shell, finally arrived at the bottom of the weekend following its most recent television spot. It looks pretty solid and lo and behold, I woke up on Monday morning to the usual chorus of boos and cheers – boos, of course, with respect to actress Scarlett Johansson’s casting for the lead role as “The Major”, sans Kusanagi, interestingly.
I’m not going to lie though. With at least one trailer and several promos online, the visuals and overall adherance to Shirow Masumane’s IP look greatly approving thusfar, and the second trailer beneath looks nothing short of that. Regardless though, I’m pretty much just waiting for the reviews to start pouring out to see if this is recommendable. Critics are usually pretty scathing no matter how fun or slick a film appears to be, and so I’m pretty confident that moviegoers will know better by the final week so as to decide whether or not to give this one a chance. Besides, reviews, for the most part, do matter. Dredd 3D proved that.
SYNOPSIS:
Based on the internationally-acclaimed sci-fi property, “GHOST IN THE SHELL” follows the Major, a special ops, one-of-a-kind human-cyborg hybrid, who leads the elite task force Section 9. Devoted to stopping the most dangerous criminals and extremists, Section 9 is faced with an enemy whose singular goal is to wipe out Hanka Robotic’s advancements in cyber technology.
Ghost In The Shell opens on March 31 with Pilou Asbæk, Kitano “Beat” Takshi, Michael Pitt and Chin Han also starring. Watch the new trailer now.
GHOST IN THE SHELL Gets More Micro Teaser Action With New Footage And A Behind-The-Scenes Featurette
Unabashed moviegoers might otherwise take a liking to director Rupert Sanders’s treatment of the hit manga/anime property, Ghost In The Shell. Others, well…not so much; Issues still loom over the one casting decision that highlights the prevalent hitch over Hollywood whitewashing, further discouraging some from even giving the film a second or third thought.
That discussion obviously carries some weight and it obviously doesn’t help that prolific anime auteur Oshii Mamoru who adapted Shiro Masumane’s original groundbreaking manga is also endorsing the big budget spectacle against naysayers who feel ignored on the topic of yellowface. Needless to say, this it isn’t deterring the PR people in the least from driving the conversation forward about the film from one news site to the next and the next and so on and on, etc.
Having started with a series of five micro teasers aired on television during Mr. Robot back in late September, and as recently as a few days ago with a reminiscent knockout look at actress Scarlett Johansson in the lead, the guys at Paramount and Dreamworks made the brilliant choice of starting early, slow and steadily to get netizens aroused and curious at the modest obscurity thusfar. It’s probably working and ample enough to get an audience by this Sunday when the first official teaser trailer might arrive if that recent microteaser is anything to hint at.
In the meantime, Paramount International is out with a new miniteaser preceded by a making-of featurette with Sanders, Oshii and Johansson all front and center and speaking on the film’s efforts. Sanders’s previous work on Snow White and The Huntsman shows he can handle big scale action, visuals and set pieces and there are some newer bits in the following video that might echo this. Love it or hate it, it’s coming on March 31 in IMAX 3D, so be ready for the first teaser trailer when it arrives and the discussion ultimately continues from there.
GHOST IN THE SHELL Officially Adds Scarlett Johansson. Your Argument Is Still Invalid.
Variety is reporting that actress Scarlett Johansson has officially signed on to play the lead role in the forthcoming live-action adaptation of author Shirow Masumane’s highly acclaimed 1989 cyberpunk manga, Ghost In The Shell, from Dreamworks. Johansson was in talks as recently as last October after The Wolf Of Wall Street and Suicide Squad co-star Margot Robbie left.
Based on a script by William Wheeler, Johansson will play a semi-human cybernetically enhanced counter terrorist in a future world where society’s fixation on technological advancements have made it possible for most people to hack their way into virtually anything, anywhere, opening doors to all sorts of intrigue and corruption on a massive scale.
It’s almost a certainty that any and all development on this particular project will find a way to take the narrative and adjust it accordingly to reach an English-speaking audience while hopefully lending itself to all the right elements that made Ghost In The Shell such a memorable cult hit for its time as both a graphic novel and an animated feature film six years later. But then again, who knows? To some, it feels like another mild blow for fans of Asian properties with hopes largely ignored for of a Hollywood-produced live-action manga or anime ever seeing the light of day with an Asian lead. But then again, Luc Besson’s Lucy made bank last year…sooo, yeah. Money.
Nevertheless, we’ve had our share of surprises with other titles, so we’re bound to find out where this one goes. Rupert Sanders is directing the film, and hopefully he knows what he’s doing.
Johansson gets more screentime this summer in Marvel’s Avengers: Age Of Ultron this May.
Scarlett Johansson May Star In GHOST IN THE SHELL. Your Argument Is Invalid.
In the weeks since it was announced that The Wolf Of Wall Street co-star, actress Margot Robbie was up for the main role in director Rupert Sanders‘ live-action foray into Shirow Masamune’s popular 1989 manga, Ghost In The Shell, the usual assortment of blowhard netizens commented with their usual skepticism behind a non-Asian actress portraying a relatively Asian role. This opinionated approach has often been highlit in social media, potentially drumming up sentiments pointed toward racism in Hollywood as some may feel that Asians and minorities alike are still getting the short end of the stick, and quite frankly, they’re not completely wrong.
Nevertheless, movies serve their purpose of entertaining the masses of those who go to see them. As such, it is only a matter of time now before we find out who will open their wallets to Sanders‘ live-action vision for the hyper-kinetic cyberpunk saga and its 1995 award-winning animated feature. And to make it clear, the people at Dreamworks don’t care much about who says what, as they find talent, potential (and money) where they feel they see it most, which is why actress Scarlett Johansson is now a frontrunner for the upcoming cyberpunk thriller.
The actress was this year’s blessing for filmmaker Luc Besson whose most recent sci-fi thriller, Lucy, earned more than $126 million dollars at home, a portion of its worldwide sum of $412 million dollars. To say the least, that’s a lot of ‘fuck you’ money right there, and as far as business decisions go, you can’t totally hate Dreamworks for going where the money is, in addition to where it will also be (looking at you, Age Of Ultron).
So, that’s that. Producers Avi and Ari Arad, Steven Paul and Steven Spielberg are all behind this newest endeavor at a Japanese property following the footsteps of previous films like the recent release of Kite and the Tom Cruise-starring hit, Live.Die.Repeat.: Edge Of Tomorrow. Based on a script by William Wheeler, when confirmed, Johansson will set her sights as a semi-human cybernetically enhanced counter terrorist in a future world where society’s fixation on technological advancements have made it possible for most people to hack their way into virtually anything, anywhere, opening doors to all sorts of intrigue and corruption on a massive scale.
Granted, while Sanders‘ previous Snow White And The Huntsman bombed here at home, the fact that it made almost $400 million dollars worldwide to garner a spin-off is good news for Dreamworks in their choice of director. Couple this with the possible attachment of one of the most bankable actresses to date, and rest assured, Ghost In The Shell could prove to be a worthy cause, despite anyone’s opinions on whether or not an Asian lead could have done the same.
However, that still doesn’t diminish the importance of the subject, and nor should it. “Motoko Kusanagi” would have been awesome to see on the big screen as opposed to a “Mary” or a “Monica” or whatever they decide to name this character, who, regardless of any criticisms, will likely be played by a white actress. Cha-ching.
In the meantime, Robbie is now a front runner along with her Focus co-lead, Will Smith and actors Ryan Gosling and Tom Hardy for casting spots in director David Ayer’s adaptaion for August 5, 2016 DC Comics actioner, Suicide Squad following an announcement on Wednesday.
Stay tuned for more info.
