Having finally seen the 2014 action horror suspense thriller, The Guest, a little over a year ago, I was eventually thrilled at the idea of director Adam Wingard having secured the remake rights for Kim Jee-Woon’s I Saw The Devil. It feels like just the kind of role befitting of The Guest star Dan Stevens as he’s the first to come to mind after delivering such an impressive performance in his first film.
It essentially put the actor on my radar and with his latest TV and film prospects including X-Men television series spin-off, Legion, and Bill Condon’s Beauty And The Beast next year, I can’t wait to see what happens next. The same goes for Stevens’s latest film announcement made in less than a day after events kicked off at the American Film Market in Santa Monica when it was reported that Gareth Evans was on deck to direct his newest period thriller, Apostle.
Yup, the trades are saying that Stevens will star from Evans’s script which tells of a religious cult that ends up with more than what they bargained for after holding a woman in captivity and demanding ransom from her brother, thus underestimating his resolve to rescue her from their island leir. XYZ Films is handling global sales at AFM this week and are producing along with Severn Screen and Evans’s One More One Productions banner with plans to shoot in the UK in March of next year.
Evans saw global acclaim with the stellar Indonesian dual-film action franchise, The Raid with a third installment on hold for a few more years. Apostle definitely reads differently as a more of a cerebral piece of work than anything but otherwise still lends plenty of room for Evans bring forward the pure, raw grittiness he brings to the screen with Stevens present to help enhance the story and drama as its lead.
