GINTAMA: YOSHIWARA IN FLAMES Teaser Re-Ignites The Blaze Online!
It’s been nine years since I scarfed down most of the animated Gintama series at a time when I had more time on my hands, allowing me to catch up on a bunch of anime I missed out on over the years. Gintama remains a go-to for me as the most hilarious and outlandish, and action-packed anime I’d ever seen, especially when it comes to the “Yoshiwara in Flames” arc.
Those episodes aired in 2009 and now, Warner Bros. Japan is gearing up for a new retelling of the arc that finds our odd-jobbers in the salacious town of Yoshiwara where protagonist, Gintoki, befriends a pickpocket efforting to reunite with his mother. I need to rewatch this arc as soon as possible, but it’s a story full of as many unhinged laughs as the rest of the show, as well as explosive action, some of which see Gintoki’s cohort, Kagura, squaring up against her long lost brother.
I’d actually hoped to see this arc adapted for the screen myself, albeit in live-action. I would’ve loved to have seen Kanna Hashimoto’s Kagura take on her Yato form as it would have been one of the most kick-ass moments ever brought to life from Hideaki Sorachi’s manga.
To this end though, this newest feature animated revival of the arc hails from Bandai Namco Pictures. Naoya Andou (Paradox Live the Animation) directs from a screenplay by Taku Kishimoto who is also penning the upcoming animated revival of “One Piece.” Gintama franchise steward Youichi Fujita is serving in a supervisory capacity, with Gintama veteran Shinji Takeuchi steering character design and chief animation.
A new Ginpachi spin-off series is coming this October as well. In the meantime, check out the teaser for Gintama: Yoshiwara In Flames below ahead of its 2026 release!
