GUNDAM: Preliminary Poster Signals New Live-Action Co-Production Moving Forward At Legendary
The latest in all things live-action Gundam comes by way of a new preliminary poster, as well as a press release issued a few days ago announcing a co-financing deal between Legendary Pictures and Bandai Namco Filmworks Inc. The latter’s Tokyo-based firm will also see the launch of Bandai Namco Filmworks America, LLC (BNFA), as a North American subsidiary beginning
April 1 for the film’s upcoming production.
Additionally, Jim Mickle, showrunner and co-creator on Netflix series “Sweet Tooth,” will direct the film from Brian K. Vaughn’s script, marking another new development in the project since its announcement in 2018 before it landed at Netflix with Jordan Vogt-Roberts set to helm. Plot details are under wraps but folks familiar with the IP know full well of the franchise’s gargantuan legacy in Japanese anime and entertaiment since its inception from the mind of creator Yoshiyuki Tomino.
Mobile Suit Gundam, which began broadcasting in 1979, established the genre of “real robot anime” that could not be described in terms of simple good and evil, which had been the trend of robot anime up to that point, with realistic depictions of war, detailed scientific examinations, and intricately interwoven human dramas that treated robots as “weapons” called “mobile suits,” and caused a huge boom.
Since then, as a long running series, 25 anime series, 34 movies, 27 OVAs, streaming content, event-exclusive footage, TV specials, etc. have been produced, and over its long history up to the present, it has gained a lot of fans around the world.
A release date also remains pending. I’m new to Gundam as it was one of those shows and OVAs I was never exposed to growing up, but I’m definitely familiar with the rumors that spawned over fan fervor on a lot of dubious sites hyping up a live-action film. After twelve years of doing this, it’s awesome to be able to report something more corporate and official.
